International Symposium on Indonesian Politics 2019

Politics and Citizenship: Challenges on Democracy Consolidation in Digital Era

Registration

Symposium Description

Democratization in Indonesia is very dynamic. The practice of democracy extends from conventional to digital. Including political conflicts, serving coalitions to democratic narratives and reforms that are increasingly open to the public that are relatively new for most of people. Therefore facing the politics and government after the 2019 Election, we are required to build a better consolidation of democracy.

At least there are three main characters in order to create democratic consolidation (Davidson, 2009; Mietzner, 2010). First, there is no major political group that seeks to overthrow democratic government or separate itself from the nation-state. Second, strong public opinion and the majority who believe that political change must be in line with the existing democratic framework. Third, all political conflicts are resolved through specific laws, procedures and institutions of the new democratic system.

The phenomenon of digital democracy, explains clearly how digital technology also influences the democratic process (Hacker and van Dijk, 2000). Political mobilization, campaign strategy, polarization of public opinion, and the tools and channels of governance began to change. Big data, complexity science, crowd sourcing, new learning machines, and social science curricula in various world reference universities also adapt to this digital revolution. Digital democracy is a new era in human history as well as the future of the world itself. And the internet is the most influence key factor in democratization (Lee, 2017).

Thus, the International Symposium on Indonesian Politics 2019 will provide clarity on political issues and offering ideas for: The better democratic process in Indonesia. The government process and implementation of policies are more effective and efficient. Relations between society and the state also become more conducive.

Welcome to participate!
