UNNES Faculty of Sports Science Hosts International Conference on Physical Education, Health, and Sports

Semarang, 21–22 June 2023 — The Faculty of Sports Science, Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES), successfully organized International Conference on Physical Education, Health, and Sports (ICOPHS) at Patra Jasa Hotel & Convention, Semarang, Indonesia. Carrying the theme “Sport Industry as a Platform to Promote Health and Strengthen the Economy”, the conference served as a global forum for academics, researchers, practitioners, and students to discuss the multidimensional impact of the sports industry on public health and economic development.

The sports industry, encompassing public, nonprofit, and commercial sectors, is recognized worldwide as a vital contributor to both individual well-being and economic growth. Beyond promoting physical health—improving cardiovascular fitness, enhancing muscular strength and flexibility, and reducing risks of chronic diseases—the industry generates billions of dollars annually through ticket sales, merchandising, sponsorships, broadcasting rights, and event management. Such economic activity supports infrastructure development, job creation, and the growth of related industries.

Aims of the Conference
The ICOPHS aimed to:

  1. Provide international exposure and academic discourse in sports science, health, and physical education.

  2. Initiate and strengthen international collaborations in sports-related academic programs and research.

Conference Highlights

The two-day event was held in a hybrid format, attracting participants from the general public, professional sports communities, and the UNNES academic environment. Keynote sessions, panel discussions, and interactive Q&A segments provided an in-depth examination of how sports industry platforms can be leveraged for both public health promotion and economic strengthening.

Notably, the opening keynote by Dr. Zainuddin Amali emphasized government policy’s role in fostering a sustainable sports ecosystem capable of producing world-class achievements. Subsequent sessions explored topics ranging from sport entrepreneurship and marketing strategies to the integration of sports science with nutrition, psychology, and event management.

Impact and Future Directions

Through ICOPHS 2023, UNNES reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sports science and fostering interdisciplinary dialogue at the international level. The conference outcomes are expected to guide future collaborations, policy recommendations, and research agendas aimed at maximizing the health and economic potential of the sports industry.
